CREATING YOUR POD
You’re ready to find your pod squad, but where to begin? Here are our five recommendations on how to create a successful pod experience.
FIND CHILDREN IN THE SAME AGE RANGE
Learning pods provide your children the opportunity to socialize in small groups with peers, with the key word being peers. Trust us, your tween doesn’t want to spend his days with a group of second graders. While joining with only a few other families will mean a wide range of ages, aim to ensure that each child has at least one buddy within a year of their age.
START YOUR SEARCH CLOSE
Where to find your podmates? Start at your own school and neighborhood. Pull out that class roster list and start making some calls! Check mom groups on Facebook or the NextDoor app. Text your trusted babysitter and see if she can connect you with other families. If you’re an essential worker (THANK YOU!), consider asking your co-workers and colleagues about podding up to keep exposure in the same group.
ALIGN ON HEALTH PROTOCOLS WITH OTHER FAMILIES
To keep your family safe, it’s critical to have in-depth conversations with the other families in your pods. One of the biggest advantages of using Houston Learning Pods is our “Pod Contract”, which will help your group keep one another accountable to your agreed-upon expectations. Before committing to a pod, make sure you know whether the other families in your group are aligned to the same health precautions you’re taking.
IDENTIFY A HOMEBASE
Families enrolling in Houston Learning Pods receive extensive support in creating a welcoming, safe pod space. We recommend choosing a homebase that allows children to spread out into multiple spaces, and if possible, keep the same homebase each day. You might have three kids logged in to receive instruction virtually while two others are working together on a project and another reading with their Poderator. Homebases with an outdoor space are ideal so children can take breaks and play. And it probably goes without saying that you’ll want your homebase to be child-friendly, so go ahead and nix that one parent’s house with the white couch.
We all know this is not an ideal situation, and children are struggling with this sudden shift in their life. They miss their teachers and their friends. They’re craving routine and want to know what to expect. Houston Learning Pods can bring that sense of security to your child and help your family return to “normalcy”. Most importantly, your child will take their cues from you – if you decide Houston Learning Pods is the most exciting thing to happen this fall, they’ll buy in. And if we’re honest, the fact you no longer have to play school teacher at home should be the most exciting thing.
